Working in a variety of media, including photography, performance, sculpture and film, Campos-Pons draws on her diverse family history to recover the marginalized and cultivate poetically complex understandings of history, trade, spirituality and tradition. She represented Cuba in the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. Campos-Pons currently teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons (b. 1959, Matanzas, Cuba) has made the journey from Cuba to America, continuing the displacement begun when her Yoruba ancestors were shipped from Nigeria as slaves. Her work traces the histories of people for whom the past is not as distant as we might like to think.
